Our students and teachers are studying the work of Joseph Bruchac,  a Native American author and storyteller who has published over 120 books! Joseph is a member of the Abenaki Tribe of upstate New York, and he draws upon his cultural heritage in his storytelling. Many of his books are available in our school library for students are parents to check out.  Also we will share some of his work with parents at our Parent Meeting on October 25th at 8:00 AM, where we will give free Joseph Bruchac books to parents, along with ideas for questions and discussion starters for families!

On Monday, August 21st, there will be a solar eclipse visible in Albuquerque between 10:21 AM and 1:13 PM.  While the solar eclipse presents a learning opportunity for students, looking directly at the sun can cause permanent damage to your eyes.  To ensure student safety, we will be following our inclement weather schedule on Monday, which means that all students will stay in the cafeteria for their entire lunchtime instead of going out to the playground.  Teachers will not take their classes out to view the eclipse, but some may choose to allow students to view it online. Students who are traveling to and from the portables will be instructed to keep their eyes forward and to not to look up at the sun.  Please let the office know if your child will not be attending school on Monday due to cultural or religious reasons, and it will be an excused absence.  If you do not wish for your student to view the eclipse online or to participate in activities focused on the eclipse, be sure to let your child's teacher know and we will make arrangements for an alternative activity.

We were just informed that there WILL NOT be a K-3+ program held at Painted Sky this summer due to budget cuts and limited resources. We do have the opportunity to send 20 students from each grade (kindergarten, first, second, and third) to Lavaland Elementary this summer, along with the teachers for these students.  These 80 students will be randomly selected from the students who have already submitted registration forms, and these families will be notified on Monday, May 15th.  The rest of the students will be placed on a waiting list and notified if space becomes available.

There will still be a City Parks and Recreation program available at Painted Sky this summer from June 5th through July 27th for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.  The registration for the City program will be on June 2nd.  We are very disappointed that we will not be holding a K-3+ program at our school, and we apologize for the inconvenience that this causes for our families.

4th and 5th Grade students are participating in a Story Jumper Write-A-Thon in hopes of raising money to purchase equipment for their labs. There are 2 options. One option is to gather sponsors that will receive a digital download of the student’s book for a monetary donation.  The second option is to purchase a hardback or paperback book written by our 4th and 5th graders. Letters containing directions for ordering or sponsoring have been sent home. The Write-A-Thon deadline is April 14, 2017. If you have any questions you may contact Verna Chandler or Brenda Schneider at the respective Computer Labs.
